The standard of electricity used for interior lighting may be 220 volts, 12 volts or both. There may also be a generator in the caravan in case there is no power supply when camping out. Motorhomes can rely on generator 12-volt power to ensure that there is no external power supply for interior lighting. The battery in the caravan is supplemented by the engine or an external power supply.

　　Most electrical and other major systems in the motorhome depend on the battery for proper operation. The causes of a battery failing to function properly prematurely are overcharging, constant feeding, and poor maintenance. Keeping your RV battery corrosion and substance free will extend its life and reduce glitches. To do this, you will probably need wire brushes, petroleum jelly, baking soda, rubber gloves, and water.

　　Take out the battery you want to check, make sure it's a 12-volt DC battery, check for broken, corroded, or stripped insulation wires, check that the wires can be connected securely to both poles, remove the negative wire and clean it with a soda solution, scrub the contact end with a wire brush, and do the same with the positive terminal. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the two-pole terminals.

　　Caravan fridges use heat to cool and have no removable parts inside, relying on ammonia rather than a compressor to bring the temperature down. The refrigerator dissipates heat through a top vent. If this vent gets blocked, the consequences can be severe. So check these areas frequently.

　　The generator, battery, and 12-volt lighting circuit system should be regular daily maintenance items. Except for the refrigerator, the rest of the appliances and outlets are usually the same as they would be in a regular house. Refrigerators in RVs are usually gas refrigerators that operate on 12-volt, 220-volt electricity or propane. Pay attention to the normal sounds that everything in the vehicle makes when it is working. Sizzling noises from appliances such as refrigerators are most likely due to faulty circuit connections. It is advisable to have a click tester on hand to check for proper circuit connections.
