Light is an essential element in people's lives. And yacht as a crowd of people in the home outside the second residence, people living in which naturally also inseparable from the light source. Sunlight and artificial light are the two most common sources of light used by mankind today. The sun's ultraviolet rays damage human skin, and due to the presence of water reflection, the intensity of ultraviolet rays on the sea is much higher than on land, therefore, want to enjoy the health and comfort of yacht life, control the light below deck is a crucial design factor.
First, natural light lighting design aspects:
Generally speaking, windows, portholes, deck skylights, deck prismatic glass and cabin covers are the five main light channels, it is their existence that makes the main guests in the interior of the yacht can enjoy the light of day, without causing unnecessary waste of electricity (open artificial lighting system). Their exact construction and number varies according to the model and style of the yacht.
Hatch covers serve a variety of functions, among them the aspect of daylighting. Although there is a wide choice of sizes and shapes, they all have one thing in common: they all open upwards. More advanced hatch covers can even be opened in any direction and function like an on-board air conditioner.
In addition to the design of interior lighting described above, another way to illuminate the interior is through light vents. For example, DND Dawn Design installs curtains with built-in double sliders on the yacht's light windows or a pull-down shade (or curtain) below the skylight. This is a very practical detail, especially when the boat stops and the morning sun shines in from the direction that disturbs your sleep, you will be grateful to the designers for giving you a morning at sea where you can "sleep in". This can also be used to examine the designers' sincerity and thoughtfulness. Often it is the detailing that reflects the class of the yacht.
Historically, sailing yachts have used so-called "deck prisms", which are small rectangular pieces of glass set into frames on the deck. Their function was to reflect a small amount of natural light into the dark corners of the cabin. Nowadays, with generators becoming standard, electric lighting systems make this design an interesting thing of the past. Nowadays, we can only relive its lost splendour from some old sailing yachts of some years.
Secondly, in terms of artificial lighting arrangements:
The basic yacht interior lighting scheme consists of three parts: general lighting, mood lighting and task lighting.
General Lighting
In the late afternoon or evening, the need for general lighting for the various cabins to provide basic lighting needs. You can use incandescent lamps, which are a warm light source because of the large red portion of light in them. Similarly, you can use fluorescent lights and plastic lampshades. One of the advantages of fluorescent lights is that they are more energy efficient than incandescent lights and produce less heat, making them suitable for use on hot summer days. There are also a variety of fluorescent lamps available that emit different kinds of light. Warm fluorescent lamps highlight colours such as yellow, orange, red and purple in upholstery or furnishings, while cool fluorescent lamps emphasise blues and purples, blues, blue-greens and yellow-greens. More often than not, however, the most successful lighting schemes are a mix of incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Thus, it can be said that the design of interior room lighting depends greatly on the aesthetic skills of the designer.
In terms of specific installation methods as in the home, the general lighting of the yacht can be suspended from the ceiling overhead or mounted on the wall. Sometimes some general lighting is set lower down for a weakening effect. The use of variable light sources on yachts is also worth mentioning. Although the invention is only a small step in the development of technology, the author believes it is a big step for human civilisation because you can adjust the brightness of the light according to your actual needs, which is conducive to energy saving.
Atmospheric Lighting
Atmospheric lighting can create a warm and romantic mood in the room at night or during the day when the sky is dark. This type of lighting includes non-direct, non-main lighting such as pedestal footlights to softly illuminate stairs and furniture, dimly lit string lights around the edges of dressers, and fluorescent lights in alcoves or behind draperies.
Footlights can be used on deck at the same time as dim cockpit lights, creating atmosphere in a light way while also fulfilling a safety function. The most definitive mood lighting is not any interior light source, but the circle of lights on the underside of many yachts' hulls, which, when switched on at night, undoubtedly provides an excellent outline of the hull lines, which, together with the illuminated superstructure and the ghostly light from the portholes on either side of the hull, gives the boat a different kind of femininity to that of the daytime.
